Kara Tomaszewski ’10, has been named Outstanding Activities Adviser by the Illinois Directors of Student Activities. Kara a beloved teacher, is also the moderator of both Student Council and Pep Club at Notre Dame College Prep,
Ms. Tomaszewski, fondly nicknamed “Ms. T” by students, spends the instructional day as a teacher in our Burke Scholar classroom. This important program offers an inclusive Catholic high school education and experience for young men with special needs. Kara’s passion for teaching and bringing out the best in her students is remarkable.
Outside of the classroom, she serves as moderator of Pep Club and Student Council. As Pep Club moderator, she has brought school spirit and collaborative energy to a new level at NDCP,” says Director of Student Activities, Mr. Bob Kostuch. “Her organizational skills are superb. She is able to take an idea to the next level, every time while delegating the work and flawlessly executing events.”
This school year’s events that benefited from Kara’s special touch are too many to list but include: fall and spring pep rallies, Kairos retreats, Homecoming activities, first-annual Haunted House and organizing almost 800 students for last fall’s Fox 32 Pep Rally segment.
Under her leadership, in only three years, Student Council participation has increased by more than 200%. “We now have more than 30 highly involved members and no classroom big enough to hold our meetings without students having to stand,” says Ms. Tomaszewski.
Those are proud moments for Ms. Tomaszewski and exactly her goal. “I love seeing the students become involved and passionate, and I’m so proud when a student who never saw himself as a leader or was possibly headed down a very lonely path in high school with limited school involvement, decides to join.”
Ms. Tomaszewski was recognized at a banquet held on April 11 at the 2019 IDSA Annual State Convention at the Crowne Plaza in Rosemont, Illinois.
