Dominican Preachers Pass the Torch
The Dominican Preachers were invited to a prayer service this week as a thank you to graduating preachers and to welcome the eight new preachers. The new preachers include: incoming seniors, Emily McNaughton and Olivia Sepek, incoming juniors, Erin Phelan, Caroline Quinlan and Bella Reyes and incoming sophomores Maeve Newton, Kayla Smith and Paulina Waresiak.
The girls entered a prayer circle and current preachers placed a lit candle in a circle around a large candle. They called forth the new preachers to live out the Dominican charism and pillars as they placed their candle in the circle. The Dominican Blessing was prayed at the closing.
Following prayer the graduating preachers were thanked for their ministry to the Regina Dominican school community and for achieving the goals developed at the High School Preaching Conference last June:
- To discover and deepen the preacher within each one by increasing participation at Mass as readers, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers and ushers.
- To challenge the community to live out the Gospel message
- To connect with Dominican roots by being Pen Pals with Adrian Dominican Sisters who have ministered at Regina Dominican and are now in Adrian.
- To form a network of Dominican Preachers in the Chicagoland area.
In their preacher application some of the new preachers mentioned how they admired the enthusiasm of the preachers as they shared talks on the Dominican pillars, modeled the spirit of Dominican hospitality, and personal reflections on the Dominican charism at Masses.
The group celebrated the many service trips and projects that were undertaken during the year such as packing food at Feed My Starving Children and the Chicago Depository, making baby blankets for the Women’s Shelter, assisting Big Shoulders in a Give Back Day at Queen of the Universe Catholic School, Holy Thursday challenge to other Dominican Preacher schools to volunteer at Feed My Starving Children, and a day of service to Visitation Elementary School.
Three of the new preachers will attend the Dominican Preaching Conference in Adrian, MI, in June with Ms. Boris, the Campus Minister. We look forward to a successful 2018-2019 school year!
