North Shore high school graduations celebrated with new traditions in wake of COVID-19 pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered schools across the North Shore in mid-March, high school seniors soon learned that their long-awaited traditional ceremonies would be canceled along with a slate of athletic competitions, band and choir concerts and even the annual spring prom.

But alongside the heartbreak of forfeiting beloved traditions, the creativity and tenacity of students, parents and school officials prevailed, resulting in celebrations ranging from virtual graduations and car parades, to online ceremonies and the curbside delivery of Class of 2020 lawn signs.

Here are a few highlights from the recent 2020 graduation and commencement events from New Trier High School, Loyola Academy, North Shore Country Day School and Regina Dominican High School.

Regina Dominican High School Students Advance to 2020 National History Day Contest Finals

Holding to its legacy of success with the National History Day Contest, Regina Dominican High School (RDHS) students successfully competed in the Chicago Metro History Fair and qualified to advance to the National Finals.

The National History Day Contest encourages more than half-million students around the world to conduct historical research on a topic of their choice. Students enter these projects at the local level (e.g. the Chicago Metro History Fair), with top students advancing to the National Finals. From each state only two entries from the 10 categories compete in the Nationals.

The 2020 Regina team is comprised of rising juniors Kirka Kallioras ’22, Madison Maloney ’22, Erin Martens ’22, and Megan Martens ’22 who will be competing in the Performance category with their entry The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919: Revolutionizing Medicine. The performance captures a moment in American history that is now timelier than ever. This original work examines the medical advancements that were made as a result of the 1918-1919 flu, many of which can be seen in practice today during COVID-19 — from the value and impact of a nationwide quarantine to establishing the protocols for vaccine development.

Due to COVID-19, the Finals are being held remotely. Their performance has been submitted on tape and winners will be announced at a ceremony to be streamed live on June 20 at 2 p.m. at www.nhd.org/virtual2020awards.

President Schuster officially presented Katherine with the Young Alumnae Medal at the Class of 2020 Alumnae Induction.   Katherine was initially scheduled to receive her medal and address the students on March 18 during an all-school assembly.  A new plan was needed after the school went into quarantine on March 13.  The alumnae board invited Katherine to be a guest speaker at the 2020 induction ceremony on May 26.

Katherine delivered a reflection on one of the important symbols of our crest, THE STAR.

Highlights of her speech included:

  • My four years at Regina provided me the academic tools to succeed at college, grad school, and my career. But Regina’s tools are much deeper and include an understanding of self and investing in one another.
  • The faculty and staff were excellent role models. I remember them always being available and spending hours answering my millions of questions. They helped me develop my passion for learning.
  •  I encourage you to view the world as your classroom and everyone you meet as a teacher.

Katherine is now pursuing a new career, which hopefully will take her to a job in Washington, D.C. We wish you all the best. You can read her full bio here:https://rdhs.org/katherine-kinnaird-08-young-alumna-medalist-2020/

On Tuesday, May 26, the Class of 2020 became Regina’s newest alumnae. The ceremony theme centered around the three symbols of our school crest, The Crown, The Star, and The Book.

Following our opening prayer, Diane Garvey, alumnae relations, and Elizabeth McCann ’09, the president of the alumnae board welcomed guests. Alumna and faculty member Ms. Annie Tully ’92 and Katherine Kinnaird ’08 this year’s recipient of the Young Alumna Medal were guest speakers and shared their personal growth stories and advice.

A few highlights from Ms. Tully’s reflection on the Crown and the Book:

  • You made Regina your home with warmth and love for each other, your teachers, and your coaches. I want my daughter to go to your high school, the environment you created.
  • You don’t need to feel complete and directed at this point. It is preferable to feel unfinished because it means you are still evolving. Be patient and encourage each other as you all become different versions of yourselves.

Katherine Kinnaird on the Star:

  • My four years at Regina provided me the academic tools to succeed at college, grad school, and my career. But Regina’s tools are much deeper and include an understanding of self and investing in one another. The faculty and staff were excellent role models. I remember them always being available and spending hours answering my millions of questions. They helped me develop my passion for learning.
  • I encourage you to view the world as your classroom and everyone you meet as a teacher.

President Schuster officially presented Katherine with the Alumnae Medal following the reflections. After the ceremony, the junior leadership board class treated the Class of 2020 with the Senior Slide. You can view the Alumnae Induction with this link.

Regina’s Gabby Rocha earns prestigious softball honor

In a time devoid of many positive results — or any games at all — Gabby Rocha still found a way to win.

On March 17, the Regina junior was invited to attend the Softball Youth All-American Games. Rocha is scheduled to travel to Kentucky at the end of July to participate.

It was a seminal moment for the pitcher and center fielder. The honor symbolized her work and growth to this point.

Most importantly, it’s another chance for Rocha to do what she loves to do most: play softball.

“I was home when I found out,” Rocha said. “When I saw (the invitation) I was just like, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s no way.’

With buildings closed due to the coronavirus, North Shore private schools turn to virtual classrooms

Regina Principal Kassie Porreca said multiple electronic platforms are used depending on the situation. Assignments, homework and videos from teachers are all posted on Google Classroom.

“We do a lot of things to keep education challenging and rigorous,” Porreca said. “They’re still in school and they’re still learning. Each class meets inperson (online) at least twice a week.”
