Regina Student Recognized for Service
February 28, 2013
Alexandra Costello, a senior at Regina Dominican, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a state- level Certificate of Excellence from the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Alexandra was nominated for this award by Regina Dominican for her exceptional service work.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people across America for outstanding community service activities.
Alexandra was also awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Alexandra received this award because of her demonstrated commitment.
Alexandra earned her award by starting a program called BLOOM’N TOSS. She approached Whole Foods Market and Jewel about their flowers and plants that were no longer saleable. Rather than see them tossed in the trash, Alexandra asked if these flowers could be picked up and sent to places like Peterson Park Health Center, Northside Learning Center, Alzheimer’s Family Care Center and North Park Village Senior Center.
Alexandra states, "I love seeing the happiness that these flowers bring to people and I’m so glad the program makes so many people, both young and old, feel some happiness in their lives."
