S. Donna Markham, an alumna of Regina Dominican, received the Dominican Friars Central Province “Great Preacher Award” at the Provincial’s Dinner.
135 people attended the Provincial’s Dinner where over $40,000 was raised to support the Central Province Novitiate in Denver, CO.
Markham, a trained clinical psychologist and highly-regarded leader in healthcare and non-profits, serves as president of Catholic Charities USA. She is the first woman to head the 107-year-old national agency.
Following dinner, Markham reflected on preaching in even the smallest of ways. “Seemingly small acts of kindness have enormous consequences,” said Markham. She recalled hearing from an Army veteran who, while on a combat patrol in Iraq, encountered a Dominican sister. The young Dominican, perhaps afraid for her own safety, nonetheless offered a refreshing cup of water to an anxious warrior overheated under the desert sun. That act of kindness alone moved the soldier to convert to Catholicism upon his return stateside.
