The Regina Dominican High School Leadership Institute presents Lina Sergie Attar, co-founder and CEO of Karam Foundation, on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 9:30 a.m. The Karam Foundation provides creative therapy, holistic wellness and entrepreneurship programs for displaced Syrian children.
In her presentation, Sergie Attar will be providing students with a brief history of Syria to help contextualize the current situation on the ground as well as the growing refugee crisis. She will speak about her organization and the ways in which Karam Foundation provides support for refugee communities both inside Syria and in neighboring countries. Finally, she will suggest ways in which students can get involved and engage their communities to assist refugees.
Lina Sergie Attar co-developed Karam’s Innovative Education Initiatives and the Karam Leadership Program, an entrepreneurship and technology program for displaced Syrian youth. She frequently travels to the Syrian border in southern Turkey to run Karam’s Smart Aid programs. She was named one of GOOD magazine’s 2016 GOOD 100 for Karam’s innovative work with Syrian refugees. Her articles and essays have been published in the NYT, Chicago Tribune, Foreign Policy, Politico and BBC. She has appeared on CNN, NBC News, BBC News, Huffington Post, NPR and other media outlets. Sergie Attar has spoken about the Syrian humanitarian crisis at schools, universities and institutions including RISD, Harvard University, University of Chicago and Northwestern. Sergie Attar is a co-founder of the How Many More? project and serves on the Board of Directors of The Syria Campaign.
Sergie Attar was chosen to speak at Regina Dominican based on the recommendation of current student Elizabeth Chidiac.
