We are pleased to announce that the 2018 Alumna Medal recipient is Dr. Pia Valvassori, PhD, ARNP ’83.
During her four years at Regina, she was active in multiple sports and very involved with the campus ministry program led by Sister Nancy Murray. Upon graduation, she attended Marquette University, where she received her bachelors of science in nursing. Marquette is also where she met her husband Sean Flanagan, (on a blind date), and they have been married to for the past 27 years. They relocated to Orlando Florida in 1988 and she went to work in the Emergency Room and then the Flight Team at Florida Hospital. Her work schedule allowed her to attend the University of Florida (UF), where she earned her master’s degree to become a Nurse Practitioner. Upon graduation, she went into private practice for a couple years before returning to the University of Florida to obtain her Doctorate in Public Health.
Providing for the underserved has been Pia’s driving force, and it was through that passion that she was instrumental in starting The Health Care Center for the Homeless in Orlando. Over the past 25 years it has grown from a one-provider, one-night per week volunteer clinic to a multi-provider full-service facility with medical, dental, mental health, pharmacy, housing, mobile outreach, and satellite clinics. he also serves on several boards including the National Health Care for the Homeless Council, the Governor’s Task Force on Homelessness, the American Public Health Association Caucus on Homelessness and several local boards of directors including Shepherds Hope, Family Promise, and Bethany Christian Services. She has been the recipient of several awards for her work with the homeless both at the state and federal level.
Sean and Pia have 2 children who are both in college. Pia loves spending time with family doing activities such as going to the beach, paddle boarding, surfing, and cycling. They are very active in their parish, and as “empty nesters”, they are blessed with the ability to host children in crisis through a ministry called Safe Families.
Pia will be presented with the Alumna Medal and deliver the Graduation Reflection at our 2018 Commencement on May 26, 2018.
