Cathie Ruggie Saunders ’69 is co-author with School of the Art Institute of Chicago colleague, Martha Chiplis of the publication of the second edition For the Love of Letterpress,
A Printing Handbook for Instructors & Students. “For the Love of Letterpress” is a unique combination of a gallery documenting contemporary letterpress printing, technical instructions on letterpress printing, and instructions on the teaching of letterpress. Since it was first published in 2013, the book has been adopted as a textbook in colleges and universities and added as a reference to design libraries in schools.
The authors included a diverse group of artists, with work from the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere. Since the book’s publisher is based in London, and the resurgence of letterpress has gripped many places and designers worldwide, there was a conscious effort to not focus entirely on American submissions. The call for entries for both new contemporary letterpress artwork and current instructors giving letterpress assignments drew submissions from 12 countries. Of 36 letterpress assignments submitted: 11 were selected for print inclusion. Of the 500 new images submitted for the second edition, 240 were chosen for inclusion.
